Dillon Gabriel has once again given Cleveland Browns fans something to talk about.
The young quarterback entered the Cleveland Browns’ final preseason game against the New England Patriots with plenty to prove. With the Browns evaluating their quarterback room and preparing for the 2026 NFL season, Gabriel took advantage of his opportunity in a major way. He delivered one of the strongest performances of the preseason, completing 12 of 15 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns as Cleveland rolled to a 37-13 victory.

Dillon Gabriel football story began in Mililani, Hawaii, where he developed into one of the state’s most productive quarterbacks. He eventually played college football at UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon, building an impressive résumé along the way.

The Browns note that he finished with 189 total touchdowns, 155 passing touchdowns, 18,722 passing yards and 19,931 total yards. He also made 63 career starts, the most by an FBS quarterback.
His final college season at Oregon was especially impressive. Gabriel started all 14 games in 2024, completing 72.9 percent of his passes for 3,857 yards and 30 touchdowns while adding seven rushing touchdowns. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist and earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Those accomplishments helped convince Cleveland to select him in the third round, 94th overall, of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Gabriel’s First NFL Season

His chemistry with Floriea was particularly noticeable. Gabriel found the receiver for a six-yard touchdown on Cleveland’s opening drive and then connected with him again for a 14-yard score on the second drive.
That type of performance can be important for a young quarterback because it creates confidence not only for the player but also for teammates and coaches.

The coaching staff has to consider the bigger picture.
They must evaluate Gabriel’s full body of work, his practice performance, his understanding of the offense, his ability to prepare and his potential value over a full season.
Head coach Todd Monken has already seen Gabriel compete throughout the offseason and preseason. After the Patriots game, the coaching staff had one final extended opportunity to evaluate him before roster decisions became more urgent.

The 37-13 victory over New England may not have changed Cleveland’s entire quarterback plan, but Gabriel certainly made the decision about the depth of the position more complicated.
For Browns fans, that is a good problem to have.
The quarterback room has competition, and Gabriel has shown that he is capable of making the most of his opportunities.
As the 2026 NFL season approaches, the biggest question is no longer whether Dillon Gabriel can play football at a high level. His college career already answered that.
The question is how far he can take that ability in the NFL.
And after his three-touchdown performance against the Patriots, Cleveland has another reason to keep watching.
