Colón’s family later filed a civil lawsuit involving the ringside doctor and promoters, alleging negligence related to the circumstances surrounding the fight. Importantly, Terrel Williams and referee Joe Cooper were not named as defendants in that lawsuit.
A Virginia regulatory investigation also examined the circumstances surrounding the event. In 2016, the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation reported that it found no wrongdoing by the event organizers.
The controversy nevertheless remained part of the larger conversation surrounding Colón’s story.

But remembering Prichard Colón only through the tragedy would be incomplete.
